Health risks, problems and needs among prostituted and trafficked women

Abstract

Prostituted, trafficked and women involved in sex work often suffer from a variety of physical, medical and behavioral health problems, putting them at risk for long-term consequences. For some women, the health concerns existed prior to entry into prostitution or sex work while for others the problems arise during and as a direct result of their being trafficked or involved in prostitution. As the women often have little or no access to healthcare, the problems often go untreated and can have far-reaching consequences. This presentation will address the nature, treatment, prognosis and future implications of the physical, medical and behavioral health problems most common among this at risk population as well as the women’s needs in promoting optimal health in all domains.
