Understanding Why Women Begin Prostitution

Abstract

The objective of this study is to understand what factor(s) influence and motivate women to enter into prostitution. Previous literature has largely studied correlations between prostitution and substance abuse, violence, or HIV/AIDS; however, very little research has been done exclusively on why women begin sex work. This study seeks to reduce the deficiency within the data and literature. A convenience sample of 10 women who have formerly engaged in street-walking prostitution was used. Methods are qualitative and include a questionnaire and in-depth interview. Results were analyzed using descriptive statistics, thick description and thematic analysis. Two main themes arose for why participants entered into prostitution: addiction and survival/money. Results are grouped by these two themes, however sub-patterns emerged such experiencing and/or witnessing negative life events, unhealthy/unstable home environments, inability to obtain legal employment, and the desire to belong/feel loved.
